A standoff between an armed suspect and a police SWAT squad ended loudly but safely in Long Beach early today.

The suspect, who had barricaded himself in a vehicle, was wanted for a felony, said Long Beach Police Sgt. Megan Zabel said.

The standoff occurred in the 2000 block of Lemon Avenue, Zabel said, and nearby residents were evacuated after the incident began around 2:40 a.m.

The standoff was resolved when police detonated a diversionary flash- bang grenade and removed the suspect from the vehicle around 4:05 a.m., a news videographer reported from the scene. The suspect did not appear to be injured but was transported to a hospital.
