A sex offender who recently cut off his GPS monitoring device and made more than 50 threatening, obscene phone calls to the family of an 80-year-old victim he allegedly raped in 2004 was spotted Wednesday in Palm Springs and taken into custody.

Acting on a tip, Specialized Enforcement Team deputies found Dennis Michael McKenzie, 55, in the 500 block of South Palm Canyon Drive around 4:30 p.m. Oct. 30, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cynthia Bachman said.

McKenzie had been released from prison and paroled to a halfway house in Long Beach, Bachman said.

"Recently, he cut off his GPS monitoring device and his current whereabouts are unknown," Bachman said earlier Wednesday, before the suspect was in custody. "McKenzie has a history of frequenting the Lake Arrowhead area of the San Bernardino County, Long Beach, Banning, Los Angeles County and Palm Springs."

McKenzie was arrested Wednesday on a felony no-bail warrant, Bachman said.
