Suspect in Pizza Driver Robbery Escapes

The man eludes capture after being shot at by Long Beach Police and despite a SWAT search of a roped-off neighborhood.

The suspect in the robbery of a a pizza delivery man escaped after being pursued and shot at by Long Beach Police, who then combed the central city neighborhood where the crime occurred. 

The Long Beach Police Department issued the following news release update about the Sunday night robbery, police chase, SWAT team search and investigation of the crime in the area of 10th Street and Atlantic:  

"On Sunday, December 9, 2012, at approximately 7:52 p.m., a pizza delivery man was robbed by a male suspect armed with a handgun in the area of 10th Street and Olive Avenue that resulted in an officer involved shooting.

"After the robbery, the suspect, identified as a male Black wearing dark clothing, fled on foot.  A responding officer located a possible suspect and gave chase.  The officer confronted the suspect in a driveway in the 800 block of Lime Avenue and an officer involved shooting occurred.  The suspect then jumped a fence and continued fleeing out of sight.  The suspect was believed to be contained within the established perimeter and SWAT was activated.

"After a complete and thorough search of the area, the suspect was not located and remains outstanding.  It is unknown if the suspect was struck by gunfire.  No officers were injured during the incident and the investigation remains ongoing.
