Reported Belmont Shore Burglar Draws Chopper

Long Beach police say a resident called about an intruder but after the helicopter circled, the person was fetching their own possessions hidden outside the home.

If you were wondering about the low-circling police helicopter in Belmont Shore midday Thursday, it was a false alarm, but the Long Beach Police Department praised the resident nonetheless for reporting it.

A neighbor observed what appeared to be a woman or girl burglarizing a home in the 100 block of Nieto and called 9-1-1 at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday, said Long Beach Police Dept. spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.

Police officers arrived by ground and air, and a helicopter circled low and repeatedly for what seemed to be about 15 minutes or more, prompting a lot of calls and e-mail to Patch. Pratt reported the conclusion of the case:

"After the officers' investigation, it turned out that a homeless female had stored her belongings on the side of a residence. A nearby resident observed what they thought to be a burglary by this female and called police. No burglary arrest was made.  On a sidenote, the resident did exactly what we want the community to do when they see suspicious persons or activity."
