Update: Rainy Crash Kills Three Men

The driver, a Seal Beach resident, lost control of his truck and smashed into a freeway support pillar, killing one Long Beach man and injuring another. Sunday afternoon, the injured man died.

Excessive speed and slick roads caused a a 36-year-old man to lose control of his truck, hydroplane and strike the concrete support pillar of a freeway overpass, killing him and a back seat passenger in the back seat, Long Beach police said Sunday.

The driver of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 truck was identified as Seal Beach resident Mark Martineau. The passenger in a rear seat was identified as Richard McAleavey, 54, of Long Beach.

Both men died at the scene, according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. McAleavey was not wearing his seatbelt. It was not immediately known if Martineau was wearing a seatbelt. The front seat passenger, Long Beach resident Terrence Harris, 36, was listed in critical condition at an area hospital, police said. But Sunday afternoon, he passed away, Sgt. Aaron Eaton said.

Officers were dispatched at 6:22 p.m. Saturday to the scene of the crash on Redondo Avenue under the San Diego (405) Freeway overpass, not far from the Long Beach Airport.

Martineau was driving north on Redondo Avenue in the number one lane when he made a lane change to the number two lane, Sgt. Aaron Eaton wrote in his press release. During the lane change the driver lost control of the truck, which  spun onto the sidewalk, where it struck the concrete support pillar of the freeway overpass.
