Cocaine Cache at Long Beach/LA Port
Customs officers find more than half-a-million dollars worth of the narcotic in a shipping container.
Customs officers have uncovered a cache of cocaine with a street value of $588,000 at the Long Beach/Los Angeles port complex. A narcotics-detecting dog helped find the 64 pounds of the illegal drug in a refrigerated container, authorities said Friday.
The cache was discovered about 10 a.m. Thursday in the panels of the otherwise empty container, said Jaime Ruiz of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The container originated in El Salvador, Ruiz said, then the vessel it was aboard stopped in Guatemala and Mexico, and the container was used to ship cantaloupes to a distributor before returning to the terminal.
