POLL: Should Parents and Students be Concerned About the Recent Crime Scares at Wilson High?

Two potentially major crimes over the past week--are they random events or a sign of the times?

The Long Beach Police Department has frequented Wilson High School more often than usual this past week as two high profile crimes have taken place on or near the campus.

On September 19, a bomb threat to police claiming an explosive was in the Wilson High School cafeteria prompted the evacuation of all 4,300 students. A room-by-room search of the campus found no bomb. According to the district and Long Beach Police, the threat was phoned in to the police department.

Three days later, on September 22, a group of Wilson students who had just left school were fired upon by a male in a group, near 10th and Grand Avenue. The police have three suspects and arrested two after locating suspects in an apartment building; they closed off the neighborhood for four hours and searched for the third suspect until after nightfall.

Any shooting near campus stirs up the memories of October, 2009, when student Melody Ross was shot by a gang member after the school's homecoming football game against Poly.
