Police Warn Residents About Burglary

Police warn that the holiday season will increase potential burglary, which has increased in October.

The Long Beach Police Department is advising local residents on how to protect themselves from potential burglary, especially with the holidays on the horizon.

The LBPD issued a press release Friday evening, imploring residents to take extra precaution in the months of November and December regarding securing their vehicles and homes.

At Thursday's Belmont Shore Residents Association meeting, an officer on hand informed residents that burglary was up 40 percent in the month of October, but 25 percent of that increase was a result of open car windows, unlocked car doors, and open home windows among other things.

Friday's press release encouraged residents to not leave valuables, such as MP3 players and GPS systems, in plain sight inside their vehicles.

The press release also advised residents to put all valuables in the trunk, and avoid leaving cord devices or loose change in plain sight.

It was also revealed at Thursday's meeting that local burglars often come in the form of children ages 10 to 12, equipped with backpacks and who can easily fit into smaller windows.

Police have urged residents to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
