Sgt. Rico Fernandez said he could be more specific but that the officers were investigating ongoing criminal activity at the home near Bellflower Avenue and Willow Street about 4p.m. Sunday. As the owner was putting her dogs in the garage, they turned on her.

Another resident of the home flagged the officers and they found the dogs attacking and biting the female owner as she lay on the floor of the garage. She attempted to escape and the officers tried to stop the attack without force but the dogs could not be stopped, Fernandez said in a press release. An officer fired his gun and the dogs fled but remained threatening.

To stop the violent attack, officers shot the dogs, and one died immediately while the other was taken by Long Beach Animal Control to a vet hospital for treatment.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken by paramedics to a hospital for multiple bites, police stated.

According to Fernandez, one of the dogs was a pit bull and the other was a Labrador-Rottweiler mix. He said he could not disclose why the officers were at the house to begin with.
