A pile of 200 to 300 tires burned this morning at the site of the now completed Long Beach Grand Prix and took about an hour to extinguish, a firefighter said.

The fire was reported about 1 a.m. at Ocean Boulevard and Shoreline Drive, said Long Beach Firefighter Matt Dobberpuhl.

The flames were out by about 2 a.m., Dobberpuhl said. Firefighters were on the scene another hour making sure all embers were out.

A perimeter fence was also damaged, he said.

The tires were left over from the Long Beach Grand Prix, which took place the weekend of April 11 through 13, Dobberpuhl said.
