Pedestrian Killed on 7th Street in Long Beach

Police Saturday offer new details about the death of a man who stepped off a curb in Long Beach and was struck by a Range Rover.

Long Beach Police Department said Saturday that a 62-year-old driver did not have time to stop his Range Rover before it fatally struck a pedestrian who stepped into Seventh Street Friday night.

The victim's name was not released until his family could be contacted, but he was described as a 59-year-old San Pedro resident who was declared dead at the crash site, Sgt. Aaron Eaton said by e-mail.

"Further investigation revealed the pedestrian was walking west on the south sidewalk of 7th Street west of Pepper Tree Lane when he stepped off the curb and into the number three lane of eastbound traffic of 7th Street," the press announcement stated. The driver "stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation."

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Long Beach Police Department Accident Investigations Detective David Lauro at (562) 570-7355.  Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
