North Long Beach D.U.I. Checkpoint Set for Saturday

Motorists will be screened for impaired driving and having their driver's license.

In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes, the Long Beach Police Department will be conducting a checkpoint starting tonight, May 14, at 6:00 p.m. in North Long Beach. It will last until 2:00 a.m. Sunday, police say.

Driving-under-the-influence and driver’s license checkpoints have been proven to be an effective method to: identify offenders and get them off the street; educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving; deter people from driving while under the influence; encourage sober designated drivers, and also to ensure drivers have valid licenses.

By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the LBPD said it believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving. Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. The objective is to send a clear message -- Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest -- to those considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 9-1-1 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
