Motorcyclist Killed in Long Beach Crash

An officer witnessed the 7th and Redondo collision in which the driver ran a red light and was struck by a car, police said.

The Long Beach Police Department reported late Sunday that a motoryclist was fatally injured in a high-speed crash with a car after he allegedly ran the red light at 7th and Redondo at about 5:15 p.m. The victim was identified as Thomas Hand, 26, of Costa Mesa. The woman driving the car is a Long Beach resident who was not named.

On January 15, 2012, at approximately 5:12 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to an injury traffic collision in the area of Seventh Street and Redondo Avenue where a motorcycle had struck a vehicle, resulting in the death of an adult male.

 An officer in the area witnessed the motorcyclist traveling eastbound on Seventh Street at a high rate of speed and make a sudden lane change to enter the intersection against a red light, when he struck a Toyota Yaris. The Yaris was in the process of turning from the westbound turn-bay of Seventh Street to head southbound on Redondo Avenue.

 The witnessing officer was able to get to the scene very quickly and render aid to the motorcyclist until paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced at the scene. He has been identified as Thomas Hand, as a 26-year-old resident of Costa Mesa. The driver of the Yaris, a 42-year-old female resident of Long Beach, did not sustain any injuries and was interviewed at the scene and released.
