Long Beach Police Sgt. Rico Fernandez said that an argument outside the large bar on Ocean Avenue escalated into a physical fight and one man attacked another with a knife, causing what proved to be non-life-threatening wounds. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Neither victim nor suspect was identified because the investigation is continuing, Fernandez said in a 5 p.m. Friday voice mail, and he added that detectives were investigating whether the attack was gang-related.

Fernandez did not say why the stabbing was not disclosed prior to Patch's call, prompted by a subscriber, Friday afternoon.

Fernandez said that this was the first major police call this year to the pub near the Belmont Plaza pool and pier.

"According to emergency personnel, his injuries are non-life threatening," Fernandez said.

"Since the beginning of the year there has been no calls to Yankee Doodles that involve violence or alcohol," he added, "only maybe like suspicious activity, or a transient, very minor, very few, have been generated in the entire year."

Detectives were not available to provide further details until Monday, Fernandez said.
