Man Killed, Another Wounded, in Separate Shootings

There were two separate shootings within a mile of each other in Long Beach this evening, at least one of them believed to be gang-related.

A man was killed and another was injured in two separate shootings in Long Beach within a mile and five minutes of each other, police said.

A shooting in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue left one man dead at the scene around 5:45 p.m., said Lisa Massacani of the Long Beach Police Department. ``We've determined there was some sort of conversation or confrontation between the victim and the suspect just before the shooting,'' Massacani said.

The incident is being investigated as a gang-related event.

About a half-mile away, in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 2100 block of South Street, another man was wounded in a shooting.

``About four minutes after the Ackerfield shooting, officers were flagged down at the location at South Street and Cherry,'' Massacani said. The victim, found suffering from at least one gunshot wound, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. It was unclear whether the two shootings were related.
