Man Arrested in Connection with Shooting Death of Long Beach Woman

A documented gang member was arrested today in connection with the shooting death of a 54-year-old woman inside a converted garage in Long Beach and the wounding of a man who was visiting her.

Robert Rubio Jr., 53, of Hawaiian Gardens, was arrested at a friend's home and booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, according to Long Beach police.

He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

He is suspected in the shooting death of Monica Barboza, 54, who was found dead around 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 3500 block of Monica Avenue.

A 52-year-old Hawaiian Gardens man who is "related through marriage" to Barboza and had been visiting the woman suffered a non-life-threatening injury, police said. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Long Beach police said detectives believe Rubio was involved in some type of ongoing dispute with residents of the area, leading to the shooting.
