Update: Longshoreman Killed in Port of Long Beach

The man was aboard a ship in Long Beach Harbor when a container dropped on him, authorities said.

A longshoreman killed Thursday night in an accident at the Port of Long Beach was identified early Friday. The worker was killed when a cargo container aboard a ship fell on him, KCAL9 reported.

Steven Nicholas Saggiani, 47, died at the scene, said Los Angeles County Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Long Beach police and fire departments were called at 6:55 p.m. to Pier J at the Port of Long Beach for an accident, said Lisa Massacani, a police spokeswoman. 

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Long Beach Fire Dept. paramedics, Massacani said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was handling the investigation, and would issue future updates on the accident, Massacani said.
