A woman was hospitalized in critical condition this morning after she drove the wrong way down a Long Beach street, colliding head-on with a van and striking two other vehicles, police said.
The wreck on Spring Street just west of Cherry Avenue was reported at 12:12 p.m. Sunday, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt. The wrong-way driver was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, Pratt said, adding that at least two people who had been in vehicles struck by the woman's car were also transported to hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately reported.
``The preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle travelling eastbound on Spring Street in the westbound lanes lanes of traffic struck three vehicles -- one of them a moving van -- that were traveling westbound,'' Pratt said. ``It is unknown why the vehicle was traveling the wrong way.''
The woman's Ford Taurus overturned, a news camera crew reported from the scene.
