Long Beach Teen Arrested for Stepfather's Murder

Long Beach police took the younger man into custody Sunday night in connection with fatal shooting.

A 19-year-old Long Beach man was arrested on suspicion of murder for the shooting death of his stepfather, the Long Beach Police Department said Monday.

Jailed on suspicion of murder was Joel Torres, a Long Beach resident, who was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, police department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said in an e-mailed arrest announcement.

According to Pratt, a shooting was reported at about 11 p.m. Sunday near 69th Street and Long Beach Boulevard in North Long Beach, and arriving officers found Rogelio Aguirre-Lopez, 37, shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Pratt wrote.

Witnesses allegedly directed officers to the shooter they identified as Torres, who was taken into custody at an apartment complex in the vicinity of the killing, Pratt said.

``Based on the preliminary investigation," Pratt wrote, "it was determined there was a dispute between the suspect and the victim - stepfather to the suspect - which resulted in the shooting."
