Long Beach Police Dept.'s DUI Patrols Continue Under Grant
This weekend six officers spent a full shift looking for imparied drivers, but arrested only two suspects.
The police department's traffic division conducted a DUI saturation patrol throughout Long Beach from 6 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday morning.
During the eight-hour operation, six additional police officers patrolled the city looking for impaired drivers, but made just two DUI arrests.
The so-called saturation patrol for drunk drivers wrote far more tickets this Saturday night: officers issued six unlicensed/suspended license citations, impounded five vehicles, and 26 parking and 52 miscellaneous traffic citations were issued.

DUI saturation patrols are, according to the police department, a "vital" component in the fight against impaired drivers because they have been proven to reduce impaired driving-related collisions. .
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Safety Administration.

Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety said, "When more people drive sober and safely, lives are saved. It's just that simple. This grant will help make Long Beach just that much safer of a place to work and live."
