Long Beach Pedestrian Killed on Redondo Today

A 71-year-old man was struck by a Lincoln driven by an 89-year-old man. Police did not cite the driver.

A Long Beach pedestrian on Redondo Avenue Tuesday morning was struck at the 11th Street intersection in what police said was an unmarked crossing area.

The Lincoln Mercury hit the victim, a 71-year-old Long Beach resident whose name police did not release, at about 10 a.m. and remained on the scene, police said.His name was not given as family notification has not been made, police said.

Long Beach Police Department patrol officers happened upon the collision and the driver, an 89-year-old Huntington Beach man whose name police also did not disclose. The driver was questioned at the crash site but not cited, said a press release e-mailed by department spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

"It's unknown if age was a factor," Aronna said later, responding to a Patch question.

The initial crash probe suggests that the 2006 Lincoln was moving south on Redondo when "the pedestrian attempted to cross at an uncontrolled intersection, and was struck by the vehicle, Aronne's news release stated. There was a witness who reported the collision via 9-1-1.
