LB Police To Increase DUI Patrols Saturday

The enforcement action is aimed at reducing drug and alcohol related deaths and accidents on roadways.

Long Beach police will be conducting DUI saturation patrols tonight from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday in the south and east portions of the city.

The effort is aimed at reducing the number of people killed and injured in alcohol and drug related accidents, said police officials in a statement.

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 13 lives and resulted in 274 injury crashes harming 388 of our friends and neighbors,” said Long Beach Police Traffic Section Sergeant Ernie Kohagura, in a statement.

The average American has a 30 percent chance of being killed or injured by an impaired driver, and saturation patrols have been proven to reduce impaired driving-related collisions, according LB police officials.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints and saturation patrols enforcement has proven to be the most effective documented method of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. (Read more here…)
