Updated story:

A 25-year-old man was behind bars Friday, suspected of injuring his 6-month-old son, causing the infant to be hospitalized in Long Beach in extremely critical condition, authorities said.

David Gomez of East Rancho Dominguez is being held at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood with bail set at $100,000, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Don Walker. He was arrested at 7 a.m. Thursday, according to online jail records. The child had been in his care on Wednesday. He was later taken from the 15600 block of Washington Avenue in Compton and brought to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center suffering from traumatic body injuries, Walker said.

Sheriff's detectives went to the hospital Wednesday night to investigate and subsequently arrested Gomez, he said. Sheriff's detectives are investigating the case because it originated in Compton, where police services are provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or (800) 222-TIPS.
