DUI Enforcement Hiked Citywide in Long Beach

Long Beach Police are among numerous L.A. County law enforcement agencies with checkpoints. Find out where they are.

Long Beach will be subject to a citywide intensive DUI enforcement Saturday to crack down on Labor Day drunk or impaired driving, only one of numerous cities with DUI checkpoints this weekend.

The Long Beach Police Department has not identified DUI checkpoint locations but instead will increase patrols throughout the 50-square-mile city, the department announced.

The intensified patrols begin at 8 p.m. Saturday and will last through 4 a.m. Sunday, police said.

"In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI Saturation Patrols are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving," a press statement explained.

Nationally, impaired driving caused by alcohol or drugs causes one death every 30 minutes, and one injury every two minutes, the police department said. The average American has a 30% chance of being killed or injured by an impaired driver.

Long Beach has not disclosed its target areas but have provided the following details:

The California Highway Patrol will conduct a "maximum enforcement" effort from 6:01 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday, during which all available officers will be deployed. (See below for a schedule.)
