DUI Checkpoint Tonight

Long Beach Police also will be checking drivers for valid licenses.

The Long Beach Police Department plans to set up a checkpoint tonight to snare intoxicated motorists and check for valid drivers licenses. It will occur from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., April 9 to April 10, somewhere in the LBPD's West Division.

Depending on traffic and weather, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested, the LBPD says.

Funds for the checkpoint come from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  And as always, the police encourage the public to call 9-1-1 if they see a driver who seems intoxicated.

The LBPD's "saturation patrol" of March 25 resulted in two DUI arrests and six citations to drivers who were unlicensed or driving with suspended licenses. (A saturation patrol is one in which a number of officers are concentrated in an area to look out for those driving under the influence of alcohol.)

On  Jan. 22, a checkpoint in the East Division netted four arrests for driving under the influence, and one arrest for possession of drugs and a parole violation.  Seven vehicles were impounded because the drivers were unlicensed or had a suspended license.
