Coroner releases Identity of Man Found in the Lagoon

Long Beach police are investigating whether the man accidentally drowned in the Belmont Heights Colorado Lagoon.

The man found floating dead in Belmont Heights' Colorado Lagoon was identified by the L.A. County Coroner as a Compton resident.

Howard Webb's body was discovered first by residents at about 6:15 a.m. Monday in the water near Appian Way and Colorado Street, said Sgt. Rico Fernandez of the Long Beach Police Department. The lagoon sprawls between several neighborhoods but Webb was discovered near Colorado Street and Appian Way, where road construction had already closed part of the street.

Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter told City News Service that Webb's death was reported as a drowning, possibly a suicide, but an official ruling on the cause of death was pending autopsy results.

Fernandez said Monday that there was no sign of foul play and "it appeared that he entered the water on his own."
