UPDATE: Dead Man Found in Colorado Lagoon May be Accidental Death

Long Beach police say no foul play is suspected in an older man's death after entering the water. A shoe and shirt were found nearby.

Updated with elaboration and a few more details

A man found in the Colorado Lagoon by residents Monday morning may have died accidentally after apparently partly disrobing to swim near the small pier near Colorado Street and Appian Way, Long Beach police say.

The death was initially investigated as a possible suicide but further information gathering found a shoe in one spot and his shirt in another, and there were no signs of foul play at the lagoon in Belmont Heights, said Long Beach police Sgt. Rico Fernandez.

"It looks by appearances that he went in on his own and [there] doesn't appear to be any foul play," Fernandez said. He said toxicological tests will be conducted as part of the L.A. Coroner's Office probe into the cause of death but detectives are investigating the case as a possible "accidental drowning."

Residents called 9-1-1 after spotting the man's body at 6:15 p.m.  and pulled him out of the water, said Fernandez. The man, whose name was not released, was dead.

The street is under construction nearest the lagoon wharf and already closed to traffic, and police cars were lined up near the intersection of Nieto, where Rogers Middle School is a block away. Even students walking to school didn't seem to notice the sad scene nor yellow police tape, although news helicopters drew parents' attention.

Authorities withheld the name of the dead man, pending notification of kin, and described him as an older black man.
