'Bash Mob' May Attack The Innocent, Long Beach Police Warn

A group attack on innocent bystanders and property - known as a 'Bash Mob' - is expected Friday at 2 p.m. by the Long Beach Police Department, officers warn.

Police said they learned of the Friday planned "Bash Mob" based on investigating a July 9th attack by more than 100 people at The Pike theater and dining complex as well as at another downtown shopping area, City Place.

Before an evening press conference, LBPD issued a Nixel alert and a news release warning the public to be cautious and to report any suspicious activity, stating that while the department respects free speech, it would not tolerate criminal acts.

"On July 9th at about 8:00 p.m., well over 100 individuals decided to participate in a 'Bash Mob' in the Pike and City Place area of our downtown," the news release states.  "A 'Bash Mob' is a planned, sudden assembly of individuals who attack innocent people and businesses by committing thefts, property damage, and assaults.  Once these crimes are committed, the individuals flee the area.

"'Bash Mobs' have been seen throughout the nation and are a cause for great concern. Many people do not realize the mere participation in such an event can result in felony charges including conspiracy, and are punishable by imprisonment in the state prison."

Anyone with information about the potential group attack is asked to report it to LBPD via 9-1-1 and can remain anonymous by visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
