Suspected Family Assault Ends in LB Standoff
The man allegedly struck a family member and barricaded himself inside a residence.
A 23-year-old parolee suspected of assaulting a family member barricaded himself in a residence in Long Beach and was taken into custody after a SWAT standoff, police said Tuesday.
Deandre Palmer allegedly struck a family member over the head with a blunt object around noon Tuesday in the 3000 block of Gale Avenue, said Long Beach police Lt. Paul LeBaron.
"The investigation led to the 1200 block of Maddox Street where we identified a residence where we believed the suspect was hiding inside,'' LeBaron said.

Police called out Palmer, a parolee they believed to be armed and knew from prior arrests for assault with a deadly weapon and weapons violations, but he did not comply and a SWAT unit was called in, LeBaron said.
"We also knew he was on parole,'' LeBaron said, adding that police believed he was armed.

About 10 families were evacuated from the immediate area and police used "some chemical equipment'' to get Palmer to surrender around 11:45 p.m., LeBaron said.
Police were still searching the residence for evidence late Tuesday, LeBaron said.
