The man was fatally shot in the middle of the afternoon and later died, police said Thursday.

The man fatally shot in the Alamitos Beach neighborhood was identified Thursday afternoon by the Long Beach Police Department, which also provided a few more details on the case.

The victim was identified as Devin Smith, 20, of Long Beach, and his death was being investigated as a possibly gang-related homicide, Sgt. Aaron Eaton wrote in an e-mailed news release.

Eaton said Thursday that officers called to a report of shots being fired in the 1400 block of Florida Avenue at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday discovered Smith laying in an apartment courtyard. Smith later died at a local hospital, Eaton said.
