A Few People Got Nabbed With Illegal Fireworks

Long Beach Fire Department's arson detail saw a mostly trouble-free July 4th

A home burned in Compton, three fires broke out in Newport Beach and a man in Fullerton was seriously burned in the face, but in Long Beach, firefighters reported few July 4th problems with illegal fireworks.

Long Beach police are still compiling their Fourth of July statistics and have yet to weigh in with total arrests and citations, including for illegal fireworks.

But the city Fire Investigations Unit, on patrol throughout Independence Day, seized only a "minimal amount" of illegal fireworks and issued a total three misdemeanor citations, public information officer and firefighter Will Nash said July 6.

The arson detail received 52 calls for service and there were no fires or burn injuries in Long Beach related to fireworks, Nash said.

The Long Beach Fire Investigations Unit, or arson detail, has the power to cite, and in Long Beach, the penalty for illegal fireworks is a $1,000 fine and six months jail time. Fire officials said they had done a lot of public outreach work before July 4th to get the word out about illegal fireworks.
