Two officers were investigating a takeover robbery at the Bixby Knolls store just after 1 a.m. when they saw three men fleeing the scene in a vehicle, said Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell.  As the officers chased the suspects' vehicle, they believed they were being shot at, McDonnell said, adding that bullet casings recovered by investigators appear to bear out the officers' account.

At the end of the chase, the suspects got out of the vehicle, and that was when the officer-involved shooting occurred, McDonnell said.

One suspect died at the scene and another was taken to a hospital, he said.   The robbers, who carried handguns, robbed the store and a customer outside, McDonnell said.

The suspect being sought was described as black, of medium height and skinny build. He wore a white long-sleeve shirt with a stripe at the bottom and dark, baggy camouflage shorts.
