The women's U.S.A water polo team snuck away with the win Tuesday in a thriller against the two-time gold medalists from Australia Tuesday in overtime. The team, with natives Lauren Silver and Lauren Wenger, scored 11-9 Tuesday, and will play for gold this Thursday at noon.
Australia, trailing 9-8 with one second left in regulation, ran a play to inbound the ball when U.S.A coach Adam Krikorian called an erred timeout. Because his team did not have the ball it was, by-rule, a penalty shot. Australia scored and sent the game into overtime.

Krikorian was bailed out, however, in the first three-minute overtime by two goals from Maggie Steffens and Kami Craig. Australia was shut out in both overtimes.
“I thought Betsy had grabbed it [the ball] with two hands so I called timeout. Obviously not a smart decision, but it’s a team sport and even the coach makes mistakes,” said Krikorian on the last second call. He went on to add that the team players salvaged the call during overtime.
