Long Beach's High School Water Polo News

Wrap up of 9-1 to 9-12 water polo games in Long Beach.

Patriot day marked the opening of the Wilson boys water polo season when the Bruins (6 in CIF Division 1) traveled to Newport Harbor and lost to the hosting Sailors (2 in CIF Division 1) 9-10.

Newport Goalie Wyatt Muller sparked the come back with a penalty shot block of Wilson’s Jackson Kimbell, last season CIF Division 2 player of the year. The Sailors responded to the block with three consecutive goals in the third period. And with 1:05 left in the fourth Newport Harbor’s Curtis Fink sunk the last nail in the Bruin’s coffin with a shot from set.

Wilson’s Max Irving missed a great scoring chance from the perimeter in the final minute, but it was sent away by Muller.

“Those two 5-meter (penalty shots) were just kind of hard,” said Tony Martinho, Wilson head coach. “I thought we had a lot of opportunities.”
