Locals' Travel will be up for Thanksgiving--by Road

An increase in holiday travel this year is forecast by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Plus, AAA lists top destinations for travelers.

More than 3 million Southern Californians are expected to take trips during Thanksgiving weekend this year, according to a report released Friday by the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The number of travelers is expected to increase by 4.1 percent over last year to 3.3 million people. According to AAA predictions, 2.8 million travelers will drive to their destinations, 386,000 will fly and 91,000 will travel by other means.

Travel during Thanksgiving dipped by 26 percent between 2007 and 2008, then by another two percent in 2009. It increased by 10.4 percent to 3.19 million local residents last year, according to the AAA report.

“Many Southland residents continue to have financial concerns, but more people have decided this year that despite those concerns, they will celebrate Thanksgiving with a vacation,” said Filomena Andre, the Auto Club’s vice president for travel, in a statement.

Nationally, more than 40 million people are expected to travel this holiday weekend.

Here are the top destinations for SoCal travelers, according to a survey of the Auto Club’s AAA Travel agents:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. San Diego
  3. San Francisco
  4. Grand Canyon
  5. Anaheim (Disneyland)
