Hotsy Totsy Long Beach Hits Record 88 Degrees

Only slight cooling predicted as Long Beach Airport inches toward 90 Wednesday. But it's always about 70-something in Belmont Shore.

Record temperatures in Long Beach and three other spots in Los Angeles County today were well above normal for this January 4, but ever so slightly cooler weather is forecast for Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

It was only hotter than Long Beach at UCLA and San Gabriell, where it was a scorching 91--in January.

The temperature reached 88 at Long Beach Airport, breaking the record of 85 set in 1969; 85 degrees at Los Angeles Airport, breaking the previous record for a Jan. 4 of 82 set in 2001; 89 at UCLA, breaking the previous record of 83 set in 2001;and 91 in San Gabriel, breaking the old record of 87, set in 2001.

Other highs included 88 in Hawthorne; 87 in Chatsworth and Pasadena; 86 in downtown Los Angeles; 85 in Burbank, Woodland Hills and at the Santa Monica Airport; and 83 in Northridge, Pomona, Torrance and Van Nuys.

The system will exit the region on Friday, which will allow for the return of the onshore flow and a drop to seasonal normal temperatures into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The temperatures forecast for Thursday: only a high of 70 in Long Beach; 84 in Woodland Hills, 83 in Pasadena, 82 in downtown Los Angeles and Saugus and 76 at Los Angeles International Airport. Long-term planners: a warming trend is forecast for the early part of next week.
