LB Memorial Among State’s Top 30 Best Hospitals

The hospital received high marks for above-average performance in seven specialties, including nuerology, diabetes and gynecology.

When facing a life-threatening procedure, it’s vital to know which hospital does it best. Near the top of  the list regionally for high performance seven specialities is Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, according to U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals list

Performed on a state level as well as regionally for the first time, the study ranked Long Beach Memorial as number 27 for best hospitals out of California’s 432 hospitals and number 16  in the L.A. metro area out of about 140 hospitals for a high level of performance in seven specialities: diabetes & endocrinology; ear, nose & throat; gynecology; nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery; orthopedics and urology.

In total, 16 specialties were considered and out of neary 5,000 hospitals nationwide, less than 150 hospitals achieved a ranking in even one specialty for criteria such as patient survival rates, volume and services, nurse staffing and advanced technologies, according to a statement.

“All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, in a statement. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

Fewer hospitals met "high-performing" standards in at least one specialty than years before, resulting in less Best Regional Hospitals for 2012, according to the U.S. News Report’s web site.

However, Long Beach Memorial has managed to repeatedly achieve high marks, said Diana Hendel, president and CEO of Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach.

“As an organization, it is our mission to provide the highest quality of care while exceeding our patient’s expectations,” said Hendel, in a statement. “We’re honored to be included on the prestigious Best Hospitals list, and we’ve seen that year after year our different specialties consistently achieve these high standards of excellence.”

Originally established in 1907 as Seaside Hospital, Long Beach Memorial has been recognized several times as a local leader in medical care throughout it's history, including a designation as of the top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular health by Thomson Reuters in 2007.
