Annual Street Cleanup

The Aquarium of the Pacific will host its 10th annual street cleanup, where the public can help reduce ocean pollution while earning a FREE Aquarium admission ticket. On Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to noon the Aquarium encourages Southland residents to join its street cleanup in downtown Long Beach, and pick up trash before it can flow to the Pacific Ocean affecting marine animals and even humans. Participants will also get a chance to see and touch marine animals as the Aquarium on Wheels will be on-site at the cleanup. The event has grown steadily over the years and has resulted in more than 1,000 local volunteers removing over 7,000 pounds of trash from the streets of Long Beach.

The cleanup will aim at removing litter and debris, which will assist in preventing trash from impacting the local stretch of river and bay that feed into the Pacific Ocean. Participants of all ages will have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of cleaning up trash in our cities and how this helps prevent pollution in natural habitats such as rivers, beaches, and the ocean. No matter where we live in the Southland, trash and run-off in our city streets enter our storm drains and are transported into the ocean, rivers, or other waterways.

WHERE: Cesar Chavez Park, 401 Golden Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90802 (next to Cesar Chavez Elementary School) Free / Trash bags and gloves will also be provided / At the end of the cleanup, each participant will receive a complimentary admission ticket to the Aquarium of the Pacific (value of $24.95) in exchange for a full bag of trash (not leaves and other organic matter) collected at this cleanup site.
