CSULB Japanese Garden, Friends of Long Beach Public Library to Celebrate Miller Family Legacy Aug. 2

The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is collaborating on a two-site special event with the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the library friends organization and the mutual connection between the two organizations to Long Beach philanthropists Earl Burns Miller and Loraine Miller.

On Friday, Aug. 2, guests will gather at 8:30 a.m. at the historic Main Library at 101 Pacific Ave. for exclusive access to the Loraine and Earl Burns Miller Special Collections Room and to learn about Long Beach’s famous family through their collection of rare books. Alison Redfoot, assistant director for education at the Japanese Garden, will provide a portrait of the personal lives and philanthropy of the couple.

The morning will conclude with a guided tour of the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden—Loraine Miller’s loving tribute to her husband, Earl, and hub for international education. Refreshments will be served at the Japanese Garden.

“Both organizations are the beneficiaries of the Miller legacy reflected in their civic engagement and love of the arts,” said Jeanette Schelin, director of the Japanese Garden.

Admission is complimentary for Japanese Garden members, Friends of the Long Beach Public Library and their guests. New members are welcome to join either organization to take part. For additional information or to register, call 562/985-2169.

Paid parking for the Main Library is available at the Long Beach Civic Center at Ocean Boulevard and Pacific Avenue; at the First Congressional Church, 241 Cedar Ave.; or at nearby meters or parking garages.

For the CSULB Japanese Garden, paid parking is available in adjacent Lot 16. Guests must use meters or purchase a day pass for $5 from the yellow parking lot kiosk.
