Wall Street Turbulence Sends Gas Prices Down

Gas prices fell by about a cent per day last week, according to the Automobile Club of America.

For the first time since July, gas prices dropped by about a penny a day last week as oil prices declined in the wake of frenzied trading on Wall Street, according to the Automobile Club of America (AAA).

The average price of regular gasoline calculated Thursday fell to $3.755 per gallon in the Los Angeles area, representing a decline of 6.1 cents from , according to AAA's weekend gas watch. That price is four cents lower than last month at this time and 60 cents more than this time last year.

A spokesman for AAA said that declining oil prices are expected to continue todrive down gas prices, but how long the drop will last remains unclear.

“There’s widespread expectation that the big drop in oil prices will lead to reduced gas prices,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring in a statement last week. “The question is how long oil will continue to trade at significantly below $100 a barrel. That will determine whether gas price decreases are brief or whether they will provide long and significant relief to drivers who have been paying more for gas this summer than at any other time since 2008.”
