Passover for Pooches: Bone Appetit!

If you take kosher seriously and want even dog diners to observe, we have a store for you.

If you have kosherized your kitchen but struggled to find grain-free food for your dog, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) has a store for you.

"Those preparing for Passover may wish to feed their pets food containing only unleavened grains, as well as avoiding the mixture of meat and dairy, spcaLA spokeswoman Ana Bustilloz said in a press announcement. By phone, she told Patch that there are plenty of choices at the organization's regional retail pet store.

"Some people want to include their pets in their celebration and it's not that they are supposed to or the Torah said so," Bustilloz commented Friday. "It's just that some people want to include their pets .... or just want green foods and foods that don't mix dairy. We certainly have a lot of people who also choose to feed their pets green foods, regardless of religion."

The Marketplace, housed in the spcaLA campus off the San Gabriel (605) Freeway in Long Beach, has stocked a range of grain-free pet foods and foods that contain meat but no dairy. The retail pet supply store supports the $7.8 million non-profit organization, as do the grooming operation and adoption centers next door. The whole operation is located at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village, at 7700 E. Spring Street, in Long Beach.

There are others with four-leged sidekicks who favor fresh-frozen meal-size dishes for animals (think Lean Cuisine with a less desireable aroma wafting from the microwave). They will find those at The Marketplace as well.
