Long Beach Memorial Breaks Ground on Cancer Pavilion

The Todd Cancer Institute begins construction this week.

Long Beach Memorial broke ground on a new 64,000 square-foot Pavilion called the Todd Cancer Institute Monday. With hard hats and shovels, community members and hospital staff took the first step to ‘Break Down Cancer.’

The $31 million center will be dedicated to cancer programs, cancer support services and giving patients access to all they need under one roof.

It is a big step forward for cancer patients not only in Long Beach, but surrounding areas as well. The Pavilion will enhance what the hospital boasts is the already strong reputation of cancer diagnosis, treatment and research at Long Beach Memorial and the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute has in Southern California.

The ceremony, held on Monday at 350 Columbia St., had several speakers, including, Doug Todd, director of Government Affairs for Siemens Corporation, and the son of Malcolm C. Todd, founder of the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, Diana Hendel, chief operation officer of Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach and Philip Di Saia, M.D., Medical Director, Todd Cancer Institute.

The MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial will be dedicated to the early diagnosis, treatment, research and education of patients with cancer or serious blood disorders.

This is one of the largest cancer centers in Southern California, treating more than 1,800 newly diagnosed patients a year.
