Long Beach Memorial Among Top 10 Hospitals in L.A. Area, Survey Says

U.S. News & World Report puts St. Mary at No. 12 locally. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center ranks No. 1 here and among the best in the country.

Long Beach Memorial Medical Center ranks among the top 10 hospitals in the region, according to a just-released U.S. News & World Report survey. 

At the top of the list was Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which also placed among the best in the country in 15 areas, including cancer treatment; diabetes and endocrinology; and ear, nose and throat.

In the magazine survey, Long Beach Memorial ranked No. 8 for the region and was found to be "high performing" in the following adult specialties: cancer, diabetes & endocrinology, ear, nose & throat, gastroenterology, geriatrics and gynecology.

St. Mary Medical Center was ranked No. 12 locally and graded as high performing in the treatment of cancer, ear, nose & throat, geriatrics and kidney disorders. 

When Memorial patients were asked whether they would recommend the hospital to friends and family, 79% of those surveyed said "definitely."  Which is 12 points above the state average and 11 points above the national average for that response. Of St. Mary's patients surveyed, 70% said they would definitely recommend it.

Other top-ranked hospitals in the Los Angeles metropolitan area are Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, USC University Hospital, UCI Medical Center, Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, City of Hope, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center,  St. Vincent Medical Center, Huntington Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital.

The magazine survey looked at 5,000 hospitals, and 152 were nationally ranked in a specialty. "All of these hospitals provide first-rate care for the majority of patients, even those with serious conditions or who need demanding procedures,'' according to U.S. News health rankings editor Avery Comarow. "The new 'Best Hospitals' metro rankings can tell you which hospitals are worth considering for most medical problems if you live in or near a major metro area.''

These other hospitals in the Belmont Shore-Naples area were not ranked by U.S. News, but here are the survey numbers they received when their patients were asked if they definitely would recommend them:

Community Hospital of Long Beach - 65%

Pacific Hospital of Long Beach - 53%

Los Alamitos Medical Center - 68%.
