Labor Day: What's Open and What's Closed

Banks, libraries, trash collection—see which Long Beach public services will close down in observance of the holiday weekend.

Celebrating the working class since the 1880s, Labor Day has evolved from street side parades put on by labor unions to a weekend of backyard barbecues, beachside relaxation and a break from duties for some city staff.

While the very name labor summons visions of workers performing a series of arduous tasks, in reality Labor Day is all about kicking back in the spirit of a summer vacation by reveling in the very last shred of the warm, carefree season. As such, many places that usually run like clockwork will put to rest their cogs in a machine.
