Get Out: Five Ideas for Your Weekend

Something smells funky.

Three free festivals, diving clowns, and beer? Did someone order the perfect weekend?

Our goal is to make the Get Out planner as reliable as possible, but keep in mind, some events change at the last minute. We advise calling ahead just in case.

Why Go: Finland’s Jerobeam Clown Dive Team will make water-squirting flowers look like, well, a joke this weekend. is a special Community Day and will feature not only zany clown diving antics and synchronized swimming, but also diving exhibitions from Olympians, including Seal Beach native Haley Ishimatsu and Ventura native Troy Dumais. Several Olympic medal winners will be present. There will also be a special Celebrity Plunge in which brave local celebrities and firefighters will dive from a platform as high as a three-story building. The and shows will  feature the same crazy clown diving stunts and synchronized swimming. This event serves as a fundraiser for the McCormick Divers.

When/Where: Sunrise to sunset this Saturday and Sunday at 5101 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach

Why Go: This free, two-day celebration of island life will feature traditional arts and crafts, canoe rides, fire dancing, delicious food, music, kids' activities, Crazy Al Evans' Tiki Museum and a Sunday morning hula praise and worship service too.

When/Where: 1-5 p.m. this Saturday at 200 Aquarium Way, Long Beach

Why Go: This beer tasting festival will feature dozens of classic, seasonal, and craft brews and microbrews from over 50 of today’s hottest brands. If you have been craving a cold beer on these hot days, you will have plenty to choose from at this refreshing event. 

Pricing: $40-55

When/Where: 1-11 p.m. this Saturday near Pine Avenue and East Broadway in Long Beach

Why Go: This free, all-ages funk fest is seriously committed to funk, the planet, and our community. Not only does it draw some of the funkiest musical acts around, the festival includes green vendors and helps raise funds to benefit music education in Long Beach. This years funk-ified musical lineup includes acts such as The Big Ol' Nasty Getdown, Steve Arrington of Slave, Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, plus tons of other bands, DJs, artists, dancers and more.

When/Where: Noon-5 p.m. this Sunday at 800 Orizaba Ave, Long Beach

Why Go: This free bluegrass festival will feature talented musical acts such as Frank Fairfield, The Signal Hill Billys, Wreck 'N Sow, Lonesome Otis and host Jamie Sweet. There will also be a fiddle and banjo contest. Check out the website if you are interested in entering the contest or volunteering for the event.
