Get Out: Five Ideas For Your Weekend

Whether you carve, pedal, or open up that throttle; biking rules this weekend.

We have come a long way since those crazy bikes with the one giant wheel, one teeny-tiny wheel set-up. By the way, who thought that was a good idea? This weekend is all about biking and why it rules. Did you forget how? Don't worry, you know what they say.

Our goal is to make the Get Out planner as reliable as possible, but keep in mind, some events change at the last minute. We advise calling ahead just in case.

When/Where: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. this Saturday at 429 East Shoreline Drive in Long Beach

Why Go: "Trikkes" are super-fun, three-wheeled carving vehicles. Sponsored by SouthBay Trikke, Long Beach Trikkers and TrikkeWorld Magazine, these fun monthly rides start at 9 a.m. with a demo for newbies and tips for current riders. At 10 a.m., the group ride begins, following a pleasant route that showcases the coastal wonders of Long Beach.

When/Where: 3 p.m.-6 p.m. this Saturday in the Edsel Parking lot, corner of 4th and Cherry in Long Beach

Why Go: Learn how to do simple bike repairs from experts, learn bike safety from certified trainer Tom Dugan, shop the good deals on accessories and enjoy free bike valet. Kids will love learning bike safety at the "Safe Moves Bike Rodeo" which teaches bike safety via a special obstacle course. This event is part of

3. BIKE SATURDAYS AND GET DEALS

When/Where: Saturdays at various shops in Bixby Knolls, the East Village and Retro Row

Why Go: Ride your bike to participating local businesses and eateries and reap benefits beyond just saving gas money. For example, A Castle of Books at 4302 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach is offering a buy-one-item-get-one-free deal. Look for the special Bike Long Beach sticker in the window and bring your helmet as proof.

When/Where: 7 a.m.-1 p.m. this Sunday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 5000 East Lew Davis Street in Long Beach

Why Go: This swap meet and show welcomes tons of vendors and hobbysist selling and swapping new, used and vintage motorcycle and bicycle parts.

Pricing:  $10 general admission, kids 12 and younger free, $9 per rider bike corral admission

When/Where: 2 p.m. this Sunday at the Art Theatre of Long Beach, 2025 East 4th Street in Long Beach

Why Go: Legendary "Endless Summer" director Bruce Brown's documentary follows the lives of motorcycle racers and racing enthusiasts, including the beloved Steve McQueen. Brown asks the daredevils, "Why do you it?"

5. PORT 100th BIRTHDAY PARTY

When/Where: 2:30 p.m.-8 p.m. this Saturday at the former California United Terminals facility just south of the Gerald Desmond Bridge near Ocean Boulevard and Pico Avenue, 1200 West Pier East Street in Long Beach

Why Go: Okay, this event doesn't really have to do with bikes persay, but it's just too good to leave out. The Port is celebrating its 100th birthday and all are invited to join the fun. Festivities include the season-opening performance of the Long Beach Municipal Band, screenings of a film narrated by actor Robert Wagner that features fond, funny remembrances from waterfront workers and leaders; a photo exhibit displayed in a hall constructed of cargo containers; and a Memory Lane for visitors to share their own stories. Plus carnival rides, refreshments, delicious birthday cupcakes and more. Bring a picnic and enjoy a day at the docks.
