Brrr ... a Cold, Wet Weekend Ahead

Rain may start this morning, with the possibility of thunderstorms later. Expect lows in the upper 30s in Belmont Shore and Naples.

The rain that was predicted to fall Saturday morning may arrive this morning, according to the National Weather Service. A very cold, low-pressure system is moving rapidly into Southern California and expected to linger late Saturday.

The storm will dump as much as 1.25 inches of rain in coastal areas.

The low pressure system "is expected to bring periods of heavy precipitation ... along with gusty winds and very cool temperatures with very low snow levels," National Weather Service meteorologists report.

The low in the Belmont Shore-Naples area is expected to drop to a chilly 38 degrees overnight.

Thunderstorms are possible Saturday, with winds gusting up to 30 mph.

The weather service cautions that snow levels may drop lower than 2,000 feet, making conditions dangerous  for unprepared campers and hikers. Between 6 to 12 inches of snow is possible above 3,500 feet. Those traveling into the mountains should be prepared for whiteouts.
