Plaza Pool Closed Through March

The Belmont Plaza indoor pool, after recently replacing 96 pipes, is forced to close yet again to fix the main plumbing drain.

The Belmont Plaza indoor pool has been closed and is currently undergoing another round of repairs.

The pool was closed earlier this year for regular maintenance and Sandra Gonzalez, spokeswoman for the Belmont Plaza, said 96 return lines from the 1960s were replaced with new PVC pipes, which solved a leaking problem.

However, in fixing those 96 lines, additional pressure was put on the main drain, which also needed to be replaced. Gonzalez said there were several events and activities planned at the pool, prompting the Plaza to reopen for several weeks, but leaking became worse from the main drain, causing another closure.

“Everyone was pretty surprised that we had to deal with this problem as quickly,” she said. “We thought we would be able to go significantly longer, but the good news is, our plumbing will be taken care of for at least 50 years.”

The pool is now on track to open in early March.

During the closure, swim lessons and water exercise classes typically scheduled at the indoor pool have been cancelled, but Gonzalez said that visitors to the outdoor pool, which is heated to 82 degrees, are encouraged to engage in lap swimming. Locker rooms and the weight room will also be available during outdoor pool hours.

Admission prices are $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for youth and seniors.

Passes for those who purchased swim lessons and water exercises classes that were affected by the closure will be honored, Gonzalez said.

The Belmont Plaza Pool opened in 1968, and has been the site of Olympic Trials, NCAA Swimming Championships and USA Water Polo tournaments in the past. Several college conference championship meets continue to be held at the pool each year.

“I am confident that we will be in pretty good shape after this is completed,” Gonzalez said. “We are looking forward to getting everyone back in here, and getting the pool back up and running for everyone in the community.”
