Congressional Cup Celebrates 50th Anniversary In April

The longest-running sailing match race in North America turns 50 when the Congressional Cup sets sail out of the Long Beach Yacht Club this spring.

This international event, which attracts top skippers and crew from around the world, is April 5-13.

For locals, the Congressional Cup is a dynamic spectator sport which they can view for free both up close and from a distance. While the course runs from Belmont Shore to Shoreline Village, the best viewing is from the Belmont Pier.

That's the start and finish line for the event and often involves boats maneuvering side by side with each other, often within a few feet of the pier's pylons.

Plus, there are concessions on the pier, which includes Stella Artois beer. After all, sailing is not complete without drinks!

The racing takes place each afternoon, Monday through Thursday, from approximately 1-6 p.m. Wind and weather conditions can cause the schedule to adjust slightly each day.

This is an elite race, with only 10 boats entered. They are eliminated as the week progresses, leading to a dramatic final on Saturday afternoon.
