Taco Surf: Fishing License Gets You off the Hook 15%

The Belmont Shore favorite rolls out the red carpet for fishing devotees. In Sunset Beach, they'll even cook your catch.

Like the hottest Hollywood club,  too, has the VIP treatment, only it's not for stars and power-brokers. You have to be a card-carrying fisherman for the discounts and off-menu specialties.

Taco Surf CEO Todd Maris has had fishing in his blood since his youth. Fishing has been such a big part of his life that he wanted to give something back to fellow anglers.

That's when Maris came up with the 15% discount to any diner displaying a fishing license at any Taco Surf, and the ‘Hook It and Cook It’ idea. Bring your catch in every other Tuesday to the Sunset Beach location, and Taco Surf will cook your catch, and supply the tortillas, chips, salsa, and all the fixings.

“All we ask if that our patrons pay for beverages and tip the waitress,” said Maris.

The idea came from an angler who caught a 30-pound halibut on the boat Options out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach recently. He called the restaurant and asked if they would cook it up for him, and the restaurant decided to do it. Since then, the idea has caught fire.

“We had over 30 fishermen here with fish last Tuesday,” said Maris. “Hook It and Cook It nights are really becoming popular.”

“There is something really appealing about getting in from a fishing trip with your fresh catch, taking it to Taco Surf and relaxing while they prepare your feast,” said Don Ashley, owner of Pierpoint Landing. “Count me in on that one.”

Captain Larry Moore is a regular at Taco Surf. “I had dinner at Taco Surf with 7 friends the other day and showed my fishing license when the bill showed up. Let me tell you; it was a heck of a savings.”

Maris was born in Norwalk and quickly took to fishing. At the age of four, he was catching tomcod on the Annie B Barge in LA Harbor. He moved on to surf and pier fishing and then graduated to ½ day boats. Still feeling a need to fill his insatiable appetite for fishing, Maris continues his fishing adventures today fishing in Mexico, Alaska, and the islands of the Southern California coast.

On selected nights, he joins a group of private boaters from Performance Tackle in Los Alamitos to fish the Long Beach break wall. Maris fishes plastic lures called swimbaits and on most nights, is able to catch and release a limit of bass (10 bass per angler). Last week, Maris’ friend Mike Collado caught and released an 8-pound monster calico bass.

“We are all committed to caring for the resource we are so blessed to have,” said Maris. “That’s why we return most of what we catch.”

Maris also works closely with his favorite charity Olive Crest, an organization working to transform the lives of abused and neglected children. “It’s just the right thing to do,” said Maris.

Taco Surf opened its first restaurant in 1988 in Seal Beach. They now have locations on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, Los Alamitos, Dana Point, and Sunset Beach, with plans for a new restaurant in Westminster this summer.

“I am just happy to have a business where I can acknowledge the sport of fishing as a serious endeavor that should be respected,” said Maris. “The great thing about fishing is that you can do it for as long as you’re alive,” said Maris. “One thing is for sure, I will be fishing until the day I die."

Perhaps Ruehle should learn just a little more about all the things the Auditor's Office *does* do,Read More before whining and complaining about all of the things it doesn't. http://www.cityauditorlauradoud.com/office-of-the-auditor.shtml Beyond routinely identifying many areas of waste, fraud, and abuse in City government, the Auditor's office conducts a great deal of non audit-related services each year. Ruehle's comments seem to connote a belief that City Auditor Doud is somehow responsible for investigating and reporting on every bad decision the Council makes or every instance of questionable affiliation found throughout City government. She is not and even if she were, Long Beach taxpayers do not provide her with sufficient resources to do so. Despite that Ms. Doud is, herself, a citywide elected official, and despite her office's consistently excellent work-product, she can only fact-find and report her findings. Beyond her own office, she has no authority to mandate changes in the way other City officials conduct the people's business. Since her initial election in 2006, Ms. Doud's office has uncovered -and reported upon- millions and millions of dollars worth of fraud, waste, and abuse in City government. That's not sufficient for Ruehle who, despite all his complaints, will never consider running for that office himself and showing us all how much better *he* could do.

"...this article is saying that the fact that the city of Long Beach extorts millions ofRead More dollars from its residents in the form of RIDICULOUS parking tickets and charges outrageous fines for them is to be applauded?" No. There is actually nothing in this article that says that but please enjoy these lovely parting gifts.

What has City Auditor Laura Doud done since her re-election other than support anything wanted byRead More Foster & Delong. Maybe people should ask: 1. Why didn't Doud audit the city's transaction where city owned valuable port property was exchanged for swamp land? There certainly was enough controversy about the value of each asset. Wasn't it her job as the taxpayer's representative to look into it? 2. Why didn't Doud audit the amount of taxpayer's money used to support the 2nd & PCH project and the Home Depot project before that. The city was supposed to be compensated by the Developers for ALL of their costs, including meeting costs. However, that is NOT what happened. Millions of taxpayer's dollars where gifted to certain politically connected developers. 3. Why hasn't Doud audited the $1 dollar per year no-bid contracts of valuable city taxpayer owned ocean front property to the Long Beach Yacht Club, Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and other exclusive members only clubs for the wealthy and politically connected do determine what the value of an alternative use might be? 4. Why hasn't Doud audited the exclusive, no-bid, for-profit lease of city owned waterfront property to Steve Conley's and John Hancock's BANCAP company that has made those two men tremendously wealthy at the expense of Long Beach taxpayers? Doud started out with a bang when first elected. Since then, she has been a crony for anything Foster and DeLong related.
